About MovingCosts.com
We built the directory we wished existed when we were trying to find a mover — one with real information, verified companies, and no spam.
Our mission
MovingCosts.com exists to give people a honest, no-nonsense way to find verified moving companies. Moving is one of the most stressful life events most people go through — and the process of finding a mover has historically made it worse.
Lead-generation sites flood you with calls from brokers. Aggregators show fake reviews. Unlicensed operators advertise on Craigslist next to legitimate companies with no way to tell the difference. Moving scams — especially "hostage freight" schemes where movers hold goods until additional payment is made — cost Americans millions of dollars every year.
We built MovingCosts.com to be different: a directory where every listing is verified against public licensing databases, where pricing information is transparent and realistic, and where you can connect directly with movers without your phone number being sold to a dozen brokers the moment you submit a form.
How MovingCosts.com works
For people moving. For moving companies. Built around transparency.
The problem we're solving
Moving fraud is a significant and underreported problem in the United States. The FMCSA receives thousands of consumer complaints about movers each year — the most common being unauthorized charges, goods held hostage pending additional payment, and damage to belongings by unlicensed or underinsured operators. Many of these complaints start the same way: someone searched "movers near me," got a suspiciously low quote from a company they couldn't verify, and signed a contract without realizing they had hired an unlicensed broker who subcontracted to an unknown carrier.
Price transparency is the other major problem. Most moving websites either show inflated "average costs" designed to make their advertiser's prices look like deals, or refuse to show pricing at all in order to funnel you into a quote request form. Real moving costs vary enormously by market, season, building type, and service level — and most people have no reliable reference point.
MovingCosts.com was built to address both problems: verify who's legitimate, and be honest about what things actually cost. We're not there yet — building a comprehensive, accurate directory takes time — but that's the direction we're moving.
